Anand Karaj & Milni Gifts: Bedsheet, Dohar and Razai Ideas for Family and Guests

A Sikh wedding is a full day of meeting people. The milni in the morning, the Anand Karaj at the Gurdwara, the langar, the reception — and at each step there are relatives and guests to honour. Families usually ask us two questions: what do we give at the milni that is not another shawl? and what can we give 100 or 200 guests that they will actually use? This guide answers both, with bedding from our own printing unit in Sanganer.

What is given at the milni, and can bedding be part of it?

Milni is the formal meeting of the two families before the ceremony, where relatives of the same relation from both sides greet each other and exchange gifts. Every family follows its own custom and the elders decide what is exchanged; traditionally it includes shagun and often a shawl, blanket or similar practical gift. Many families today add or substitute a dohar or a razai for exactly that reason — it is warm, useful and feels substantial in the hand. A folded Jaipuri razai in a printed cover, with the family name on a card, is a milni gift that gets used every winter.

How many gifts should we plan for?

Count in groups rather than one long list:

1. Milni pairs — list the relations that will meet (fathers, mothers, chachas, mamas, brothers, and so on). Both sides usually give one gift per pair, so count your side only.
2. Close family — the people who will be at the house for all the functions.
3. Guests — your reception headcount, rounded up by about 10%.
4. Helpers — drivers, decorators, cooks, the people who make the day run.

We work with a minimum of 20 gifts per order. Ready-stock gifts are dispatched right away; personalised gifts usually take 7–10 days after design approval and payment, up to 15 days for very large quantities — our team confirms your exact date. If the wedding is in the next few weeks, call us before you finalise the guest list so we can tell you what is possible.

How can we personalise the gifts?

• Names on the gift — the couple’s names or initials, or the family name for milni gifts.
• A card — a small printed card with the couple’s photo or a line of thanks, tucked into each pack.
• Packaging — printed cotton bags for guest gifts, boxes for milni and family gifts, so the two tiers look different without being different products.
• Colour story — many families pick one colour family that matches the decor, or keep the milni gifts in deeper tones and guest gifts lighter.

What should go to the couple’s new home?

For the doli, or to set up the couple’s new home, the gift most families choose is a complete bedroom set: two king-size bedsheet sets with pillow covers, a reversible double dohar for the warmer months and a Jaipuri razai for winter. One set in a festive print, one in a calmer everyday print. With both names on them, it is a gift the couple will not duplicate.

Can the same dohar be given to every milni pair?
Yes, and most families prefer it — the same gift for every pair keeps the exchange equal. You can vary the colour by relation if you like.
