Anand Karaj & Milni Gifts: Practical Bedding Gifts for a Sikh Wedding

By Hitesh Sharma, Founder · Shree Srishti Textile, Sanganer, Jaipur · Updated 4 November 2026

Quick answer: For an Anand Karaj, the gifts most families remember are the useful ones. A hand block printed bedsheet set, a reversible cotton dohar or a winter razai works for milni relatives, for the couple's new home and for guests. We supply these in bulk from our Sanganer workshop, with one design across the whole lot, an optional name card, and a minimum of 20 gifts per order.

What is milni, and why do gifts matter there?

In many Sikh weddings, the two families meet formally, usually before the Anand Karaj ceremony begins. This meeting is called the milni. Relatives of the same position on each side — the two fathers, the two maternal uncles, the brothers — greet each other, exchange garlands and are introduced. Some families exchange a small token or gift at this moment. It is always a matter of choice and goodwill, never an expectation or a demand.

Customs vary a lot between families and regions, and the Sikh tradition itself values simplicity. So the gift is less about size and more about respect: something clean, well presented and genuinely useful in the receiving home. That is why many families choose practical household gifts such as bedding.

A respectful note: follow your family elders and your Gurdwara on what is appropriate. This guide only covers the gift itself.

Which bedding gift suits which occasion?

Occasion Who receives What works well Why
Milni Counterpart relatives (fathers, mamas, brothers) Single-bed hand block bedsheet set or a reversible dohar Compact, folds flat, looks complete when opened
Couple's new home Bride and groom Double or king bedsheet sets, a pair of dohars, a winter razai Starts the home; used every day
Relatives from both sides Aunts, uncles, cousins One design across the lot, in two or three colourways Looks planned, avoids comparison
Guests and helpers Friends, neighbours, staff Single-bed bedsheet or a single dohar Useful, light to carry home

Costing depends on fabric, size and quantity — our team shares it on a call or WhatsApp once you tell us the number of gifts and the budget per piece.

Dohar or razai: which one for a winter Anand Karaj?

Anand Karaj can be held at any time of year, and many families plan weddings in the cold months. If your wedding is in winter and the families are in a cold region, a Jaipuri cotton-filled razai is the gift people actually use that same week. For milder cities, or for a lighter gift that still feels special, a reversible mulmul dohar is the better choice. For the couple, a dohar pair plus one razai covers the whole year.

How do families order milni gifts in bulk from us?

  1. Tell us the count and the split. How many for milni, how many for the couple's home, how many for guests.
  2. Pick one design family. We show you live stock on a video call so you see the real print and colour before paying.
  3. Choose personalisation. A printed name or family card tucked into the fold, or a simple cloth bag. Keep the gift itself unchanged.
  4. Dispatch. Ready stock goes out quickly; customised sets take longer, so order early in the season. Our sales team confirms the date with you.

Five things that make a bedding gift look thoughtful

  • Same design across a group. Twenty gifts in one print read as a plan; twenty different prints read as leftovers.
  • Right size for the home. Ask whether the receiving homes mostly use double beds. A single sheet on a double bed is a common gifting mistake.
  • Folded to show the border. Hand block borders are the signature; fold so the border faces out.
  • A card, not a logo. A small card with the couple's names and the date is remembered longer than branded packaging.
  • Deliver together. Have the whole lot delivered to one address a week before, so nothing is counted on the morning of the milni.

If you are planning return gifts for the larger guest list as well, our guide to wedding return gifts in bulk and the earlier post on Nikah and Walima gift ideas cover the same approach for other communities.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a minimum order for Anand Karaj or milni gifts?
Yes — a minimum of 20 gifts per order.

Can the bride's side and the groom's side order separately?
Yes. Each side places its own order; many families coordinate the colour so the two lots do not clash.

Can you add names or a card?
Yes. A printed name or family card, or a simple cloth bag, can be added. Tell us at the time of ordering because customised sets take longer than ready stock.

What if a piece arrives with a defect?
Manufacturing defects are replaced free. Open the parcel on video so the exchange is quick, and report all pieces together.

Can we see the actual stock before paying?
Yes — a live video call from our Sanganer warehouse, any day 9 AM to 7 PM.
